Inaugural Prof. Dr. Bernhard Kleeberg: Labor’s malcontents. On the historical epistemology of the social sphere
25. June 2008
In his inaugural address titled “Labor’s malcontents. On the historical epistemology of the social sphere” Professor Bernhard Kleeberg will examine the origins of modern sociological theories of poverty and social disintegration. Prof. Kleeberg’s lecture on Monday 30 June will draw extensively on the works of British journalist Henry Mayhew in an exploration of the observation and representation of these social phenomena in the 19th century. Kleeberg will show how Mayhew’s insights were transformed into ‘sociological knowledge’ through the application of specific categories and procedures. The lecture will be held in Auditorium A 703 at 8.15 pm.
Bernhard Kleeberg joined the Center of Excellence “Cultural Foundations of Integration” in the winter semester of 2007 as a Junior Professor for the History of the Humanities and the Social Sciences. He was a research associate at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and at the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture at Justus Liebig University in Gießen. Prof. Kleeberg has also taught and researched at the University of St. Gallen and the London School of Economics.
